Crowning 5 Champions In A Day – British Champions Day on 15 Oct 2016

Image

The British Champions Series has 35 top British flat races, competing over several race courses around the UK and ending the season in a day-long festival of championship races at Ascot. The very day of crowning 5 champions is also known as British Champions Day.

The series is split into 5 divisions:

  • Sprint – as the name suggests, it is all about speed here. In this division there are two races over 1,000 metres and five races over 1,200 metres.
  • Mile – with prize money of £1 million and the title of the race known as ‘the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes’, you know that this 1,600-metre race is Europe’s richest mile race and perhaps the most regal too. In the run up to the Champions race at Ascot next month there have been six races that have delivered three favourites – Galileo Gold, The Gurkha, Ribchester – and they have already set pulses racing for many enthusiasts.
  • Middle Distance – another prestigious and iconic contests, these 2,000-metre and 2,400-metre races draw spectators and interests from York to Ascot.
  • Long Distance – now we are talking about stamina here. In different races, these horses need to cover distances from 2,800-metre to a gruelling 4,000-metre. At the final race at Ascot, the distance is 3,200-metre.
  • Fillies and Mares – the very best fillies (female horses up to 4 years old) and mares (female horses aged five and above) have their own Group 1 races to prove their ability against their own sex.

In essence, British Champions Day is fascinatingly diverse. Its multiplicity of races has

generated much interests among sports fan and fuelled an increase in attendance, not to mention stimulating much press and TV coverage.

What to Expect on British Champions Day

  • Fun & Excitement – the opportunities to see multiple races covering different distances within a day is beyond comparison. If you are feeling lucky, you can place a bet and win big too.
  • Food & Drinks – there are many bars and a wide range food choices available either at the King Edward VII Enclosure or Queen Anne Enclosure. You can choose to sit down or have a pizza, burger or sandwiches to-go.
  • Dress code – there is no formal dress code for Grandstand, although smart attire is highly encouraged. In Premier, the dress code is smart, gentlemen are required to wear a collar-shirt, tie and a jacket.
  • Entertainment – Ascot is inviting Radio 2 DJ Sara Cox and cart-topper Sigala to grace the official after-party.

Make it a Memorable Day Out

This year, the prize money for the five different races at British Champions Day is a staggering £4.2 million. The rich purse, as well as the prestigious awards, have drawn the best horses and jockeys from all over the world to be at Ascot racing on 15 Oct 2016. If you are planning to watch the races at Ascot with your family and friends, you definitely won’t be disappointed.
